Appleby which is in Cumbria on the edge of the Lake District, is an outstanding small town dominated by a substantial castle around which the River Eden forms a large loop. Appleby is renowned for its Horse Fair held in June each year and for the Appleby Jazz Festival in July. The Settle to Carlisle railway can be picked up at Appleby where the old steam train runs regularly.
